Do you enjoy the time in secondary school?
Definitely, I think its one the most memorable time that I had. I had a great time in RGS. Made a lot of new friends and learnt a lot of new things and challenged me and made me a better person.
What was the main focus during you time?
Passing exams, we still took the o levels so the exams were important, but at the same time we didn’t think much about it until when we reach sec 3, before that it was more about enjoying the environment and learning as much as we can.
Do you think you have a carefree life during that time?
Yes, I think so. Especially the first three years, I had a great time and I didn’t study as hard as I probably should have, but when it came to the crunch in sec 4 that’s when we hopped up and tied our shoelaces. We worked hard but in the first three years it was carefree.
Do you have a lot of free time at that then?
Not really because besides going to school you have lots of projects ECA and I was in the band and in band, there’s many people spent a lot of time on it, especially after school hours. We spent practising, preparing for school competitions, so I wouldn’t say that we have a lot of free time.
Do you have to stay back in school for other activities other than the five school days and CCAs?
We have very few remedial programmes, and usually when we do projects, we usually do it in each others houses. I rarely come back to school, I’m such a good girl so I used to come back home straight after school.
Do you enjoy the subjects then?
I like history and biology and I like literature those were my favourite subjects. I got through maths by God’s grace, I did not like physics at all and I still don’t like it. One of the subjects which I didn’t like at first was Chinese but by sec 4 I loved it.
Do you like RGS now or then?
I like RGS then for simplicity, I think life was less stressful, less complicated. You go to school and u have one ECA, but there wasn’t many distractions and you won’t feel about it then. Project work, you did you job, hand in your assignment and that was it. Where as in this case, I find that there is a lot of assignments to do, and now pupils have more than one ECA, now you have two ECAs and stuff like that. That can take up a lot of time. What I like about now is the curriculum, you know in history no one ever taught me about anything out of my textbook where as now you talk bout exploration, you talk bout topics which I have never explored before. In other words, what they are doing now is stretching you breadth wise, where at my time we think more about the depth. And I think I appreciate the breadth more at this level than the depth. Well, otherwise I think both what RGS has changed; there are good changes that come out of it.
Which is better, RGS then where there is less work and therefore pupils have more free time to really enjoy the subjects, or is it better now, with stress and work.
I find group work extremely stressful because you have to coordinate and that’s where time management comes in, at this age, like a lot of people don’t have good time management skill, previously, it more you know, one on one, which you do your own things, and you get home and get over and done with the work, even though its hard, but I think I would say we worked much harder then compared to now. But it didn’t seem so stressful then, now the problem is, you know, u do group work, in groups, in pairs, is it very hard for you do get anything done, and you on it even more, so I think that’s why its more stressful…but, I think we worked much harder then, than now.
I think students now can enjoy the subjects more, previously we just go by the text book, if you don’t like what the topic is about, it would be very boring, where as now we are talking about breadth, so you know everybody have to have an interest, chances are we will cover some of your interests. We maybe not be able to cover It entirely, or go much into it, but you people will learnt about a lot other stuff and get to explore that, but then we have the o levels to take, so the curriculum can be in a way shifted to your interest. so in a way you can enjoy the subjects a lot more…..now than we did previously. But also because of that, they want to stretch you so they push a lot into the curriculum. And in that sense, you know, its stressful when u dun get to do much on one topic, and you just move on to the next topic, so I guess that’s the demerit of that system. I think you get to enjoy more of the curriculum.
